Fermentation and Anti-Fascist Living

We are living through the dangerous rise of the extreme right, fascism, and white supremacy—entangled with extractivism, militarization, and ongoing colonial violence. As a form of resistance, this two-session workshop turns to fermentation, both as practice and metaphor, for lessons in movement building in the face of escalating violence.

How do we resist these forces not only through opposition, but by fermenting other ways of organizing together?

Through collective study, conversation, and hands-on fermentation, we will examine anti-fascist resistance through a decolonial lens—understanding fascism as the internalized violence imperialist nations have long inflicted on others, now erupting within their own borders. We will draw lessons from fermentation’s queer rhythms and more-than-human cooperation, and explore how these relational logics can help us build resilient, plural movements.

We will be working with vegetable and grain ferments. For the first session, please bring carrots, turnips, parsnips, and/or other root veggies, as well as seasonal crops like cabbages, leeks, and garlic. We will provide more details about ingredients needed upon registration.

Please note: we do not suggest fermentation is a political tool in itself. Rather, we turn to our microbial companions as guides for fermenting resistance in the present.
